Mary stuart, the escape from loch leven

    The Story Behind the Ballet

Mary Stuart's life is one unbelievable chapter after another.   She was the Queen of Scotland from 1542 to 1567 and the Queen consort of France - untill her French King Husband died a year later and she retured to Scotland.  Being Henry the 8's granddaughter and devout Catholic many people in England believed Mary to be the reightful Queen of England instead of her Cousin Elizabeth which created many conflicts.  The story of Loch Leven happens at the very end of her reign.  Mary was captured and taken to castle Loch Leven which was located on a small Island in the middle of the loch under the care of Lord and Lady Douglas.  Mary, ever determined first tried to escape by dressing as a washer woman but was caught and forced to abdocate the throne to her son James. However Lord Douglas's son, Will took a liking to Mary and pledged his support to her.  On the next big celebration day Will spiked everyones drinks and one by one they all started passing out allowing him to simply pluck the gate key from the guard's belt, hop in a boat and row to the shore where some of her supporters where ready waiting for her.
